Mélange Oriental
Musicians of different cultural and stylistic backgrounds meet for a musical stroll through the Old City of Jerusalem. They discover, trace and reflect the multiple voices, the history and the soul of the Muslim, Jewish, Armenian and Christian quarters. The journey includes the interpretation of traditional pieces and original music on Western and Oriental instruments, improvisations and ambient sounds recorded on selected sites of the Old City. Mélange Oriental, as the name suggests, blends these elements with Christian Jungwirth’s visual impressions of Jerusalem and creates a new language to tell the story of a sounding city.

Stefan Heckel – biographical information
Stefan Heckel was born in Graz/Austria. He studied jazz piano at the Kunstuniversität Graz and composition at the Royal Academy of Music London. As a composer and band leader he recorded four albums with his ensemble, the Stefan Heckel Group. He performed and recorded with improvising musicians Julian Argüelles, Sainkho Namtchylak, John Edwards, Frank Gratkowski, Annette Giesriegl, Angela Tröndle’s Mosaik, Irina Karamarkovic‘ Songs From Kosovo, Nenad Vasilic Balkan Band and Mélange Oriental. Compositions include music for the Vienna/London/Berlin film festival, Graz EU Cultural Capital 2003, Vienna Accordion Festival, Bach Festival Riga, Missa Pater Noster and projects with Italian painter Giulio Camagni. Music for the theatre company Ensemble Porcia and for Next Liberty Theater for Young People. He won the Austrian jazz award „Harry Pepl Preis“ in 2010. Stefan Heckel lives and works in Vienna and Graz. He teaches at the jazz institute of Kunstuniversität Graz. He chaired AEC’s Pop&JazzPlatform working group from 2012-2017 and is currently a member of AEC’s Diversity, Identity & Inclusiveness working group.

Stefan Heckel wurde in Graz geboren. Er studierte an der Kunstuniversität Graz Jazzklavier und an der Royal Academy of Music London Komposition. Er gründete mehrere Ensembles, u.a. die Stefan Heckel Group, mit der er vier Alben mit eigenen Werken aufnahm. Er arbeitete u.a. mit Julian Argüelles, Sainkho Namtchylak, John Edwards, Frank Gratkowski, Annette Giesriegl, Angela Tröndle’s Mosaik, Irina Karamarkovic‘ Songs From Kosovo, Nenad Vasilic Balkan Band and Mélange Oriental. Teilnahme an Festivals als Solist, Ensemblemitglied und Komponist: Pablo Casals (2009/2011), Sounding Jerusalem, Boswiler Sommer, Internationale Sommerakademie Wien-Prag-Budapest, Steirisches Kammermusikfestival, Kulturhauptstadt Graz 2003, Bach Festival Riga, Akkordeonfestival Wien, Grazer Religionskonzerte u.v.a. Theatermusik für die Komödienspiele Porcia und das Next Liberty Kinder- und Jugendtheater Graz; Zusammenarbeit mit dem Maler Giulio Camagni und dem Kinderbuchautor Heinz Janisch. Träger des „Harry Pepl Preis 2010“. Stefan Heckel lebt und arbeitet in Wien und Graz. Er unterrichtet am Jazzinstitut der Kunstuniversität Graz. Von 2012-2017 war er Vorsitzender der Pop&Jazz Platform der AEC. Er ist derzeit Mitglied der AEC-Arbeitsgruppe für „Diversity, Identity & Inclusiveness“.
